If I were you, I would stick to R 3.3.3 (my short-term choice), or upgrade OS X to macOS (my long-term choice). My understanding of the above is that building recent R releases on macOS 10.11 or 10.12 is fine because that's what the core developers do on their end, whereas building on older versions of OS X is now unsupported and untested.
We are also providing Clang 4.0.0 binaries for OS X 10.11 and higher in our libs directory (note that the offical Clang 4.0.0 binaries only support macOS 10.12) and will provide an Apple Installer package here soon.

If you want to compile R packages from sources, please download GNU Fortran binary from the official GNU Fortran Binaries page - in particular OS X 10.11 gfortran 6.1. Important note: R 3.4.0 El Capitan binaries are using Clang 4.0.0 and GNU Fortran 6.1 to provide OpenMP parallelization support and C++17 standard features. However, in my view, you are better off upgrading OS X to macOS than trying to meet the requirements to build R from source:

Most Mac users do not need Java on their computers and thus won’t need to install it.I spent a bit of time researching the topic, for the same reason: I am currently running OS X 10.9.5, and wanted to upgrade from R 3.3.3 to R 3.4.0. You can always reinstall Java onto the Mac again at a later point if you decide to, or determine it’s necessary. Note that whether you uninstall Java and JRE by command line or by the Mac Finder GUI, the result is the same, you are specifically removing the Java plugins, control panels, and application support for Java from the Mac.
Be certain you have the syntax 100% correct, if you are not sure if the syntax is correct do not execute the commands, and instead you’d likely want to use the Finder based approach of uninstalling java instead. Sudo rm -rf "~/Library/Application Support/Java" Sudo rm -rf "/Library/PreferencePanes/JavaControlPanel.prefPane" Sudo rm -rf "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ugin" One by one, execute each of the following commands individually: This is not for novice users, using the command line requires precise syntax and failure to use proper syntax may result in erroneous commands or unintended data loss. You can also uninstall Java from the command line by using the rm command, this is aimed for advanced users who understand the ramifications of using rm with superuser privileges.

Uninstalling Java and JRE from Mac OS Command Line The Finder based approach is the easier and safer way to uninstall Java from a Mac, though Mac users can also remove Java and JRE via the command line as well. Java will be removed completely this way.

We’ll show you how to remove java using both methods. Instead you’ll either turn to the command line, or dig around in the Finder and file system yourself to remove Java in Mac OS. Uninstalling Java and JRE from the Mac is a little more complicated than installing it, as there is no dedicated uninstaller app or tool, and it’s not as simple as uninstalling other Mac apps since the components are split into different locations.
